Eyelids (Members of Decemberists, the Jicks and Guided by Voices)

“scholars of sunshine pop” - Keith Cameron, Mojo

"A whirlwind of tangled acoustic and electric guitars that gets stuck in your head and continues to spin long after the tune is over" – NPR Heavy Rotation

Portland band Eyelids have a collective history creating music for some of the most legendary indie songwriters. Longtime friends and principle songwriters John Moen (Decemberists) and Chris Slusarenko (Guided by Voices, Boston Spaceships) channel their teenage Paisley Underground obsession and love of New Zealand / Flying Nun guitar buzz into a sound they describe as, “sweet melodies and bummer vibes.”

Immediately following sold-out pressings of three 7” and the 2014 full length 854, Eyelids will release a new self-titled EP. Produced by Peter Buck.

“John and I wrote a bunch of songs quite feverishly after our last tour and we wanted to get into the studio right away,” says Chris, joined by members Jonathan Drews (guitar), Jim Talstra (bass), Paulie Pulvirenti (drums) and guitarist John Moen.

The EP features two new songs, the hyperactively beautiful “Bound to Let You Down” and “Broken Continue”. The originals are paired with two songs the band has been performinglive: “Only Time Will Tell”, originally from the John Cale album Sabotage recorded live in surgical gear at CBGB in 1979, and “Halloween”, from legendary paisley underground band Dream Syndicate’s Debut EP). “Halloween” takes a whole album side and comes with a crazy surprise at the end for listeners (and vinyl collectors). And Peter Buck also stepped in to create what became a four guitar attack.

“’Halloween’ was one of the most powerful "in the moment" experiences I’ve ever had,” adds guitarist Jonathan Drews, also in Robert Pollard’s Boston Spaceships. “It was also the moment when it became apparent that we were a solid fucking kick-ass rock band.”

"Working with Peter on the Eyelids songs is such a dream come true,” says Moen. “His guitar playing undoubtedly influenced me more than any other single guitarist. Through the years he always seemed to know where the best meeting point between 'unusual' and 'just-plain-catchy' was, and then play it incredibly well. He thinks a lot about music without over-analyzing it- things stay informed, yet fresh."
